Geofencing as a new functionality of the CO3 platform.

The CO3 platform has been enriched with the possibility of using geofencing. How does it work and how can shippers and transport companies benefit from it?

Geofencing technology is increasingly used in logistics as a complement to telematics systems. According to analysts’ forecasts, in the near future this market will grow faster than 20% annually. We explain what exactly geofence and geofencing are, and how the expansion of the CO3 platform with this functionality can help shipping and transport companies using it.

Geofence and geofencing – what do these terms mean?

“Geofence” is a term made by joining the word “fence” with the “geo” prefix. It directly refers to geolocation, that is, the activities of determining the geographic location of objects – be it with the use of GPS or an IP address. Simply put, a geofence is the virtual boundary of a real geographic area. Defining it allows the administrator to trigger a specific action in the system in response to the user’s device exceeding the virtual barrier. This is what is called “geofencing” – the use of geofences in a specific way and for a specific purpose. In transport, the use of this technology is associated with a number of interesting benefits in the area of security, monitoring and records of deliveries.

The use of geofencing in the TSL industry

Although the geofencing technology is in fact simple, it gives people responsible for overseeing transports and supply chains a wide range of possibilities. The administrator receives a notification in the system when a truck enters a specific zone. Depending on on how these areas are defined, various conclusions can be drawn from the notifications sent. First of all, forwarders can receive information that allows them to predict travel times to the next places on the route at each stage: about leaving the warehouse, crossing the state border, arriving at the planned stop, etc.


Geofencing can, however, also be used: to send an alert if a vehicle leaves a planned route or to calculate a wage based on the the duration of stay in a country with additional laws regarding it. The way information is used depends only on the needs and creativity of the person having access to it.

How to use the geofencing functionality in the CO3 platform?

The geofencing button has been built into the CO3 truck location monitoring screen interface. Thanks to the extension of the website with this functionality, users gain the opportunity to receive notifications about the travel times of tracked vehicles to specific zones on the route and the times of leaving them. Around the selected location, for example the place of loading / unloading, the contour of the area is marked with a radius of up to 5 km, i.e. the so-called crown. It is a reference point for calculating the expected values, which allows you to react faster and more adequately to possible delays in deliveries, and in the case of using archival data – to more accurately predict travel times in the future. This functionality is essential for the ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) calculation by indicating the estimated time of arrival to a specific point based on the shortest route from the current vehicle position.
